The Immune Response and How It Can Alter Your Life!

Vlog

Most of the time, people think of the immune system as “that thing that keeps you from getting colds and vitamin C helps with it.” But if they only knew what all our immune systems do for us, they’d try to strengthen it as much as they can and not treat it so carelessly.

I’m going to talk in scientific terms here for a little bit but then I’ll come back to earth about what this does for you and what you need to do to strengthen your Immune system. Ok…

Our Immune Response has a two major defenses:

  1. Non-Specific

  2. Specific

The Non-Specific Response is the body’s first reaction to any injury or infection. It responds to any threat whether it be from injury, infection, allergy or arthritis and is also known as the Inflammatory Response because of its typical symptoms and reactions such as swelling, heat, redness, and/or pain.

The simplest example would be say getting a cut, sprain, infection, or impact from injury and then the tissues around the area with white blood cells and platelets release histamines which cause blood vessels to enlarge to let in more blood to the area which causes the swelling, heat, etc.

To summurize, this immune response:

  • Alerts the body’s first defense mechanisms to rush to the “battlefield”

  • Seals off the area to prevent the spread of the damage
  • Helps the area to repair
  • Prevents hemorrhage with clots and scabs
  • Stops the spread of infection

Your body has it’s own EMS going on at all times :-) It is possible to have too much swelling, heat, pain, etc., in which case its important to remember the remedy RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

The Specific Response differs in that it responds to specific antigens which are any foreign molecule that sets the alarm of our immune system off, such as bacteria, a virus, an allergic substance, etc. Lymphocytes are like the body’s snipers that travel through the whole body searching for foreign antigens and invaders to destroy.

Antibodies (also called immunoglobulins) attach antigens which causes them to erupt, which in turn causes inflammation, then the macrophages consume the waste left over. Antibodies are found in mucous, body oil, saliva, tears, digestive juices, and mothers milk (which is why its so important to breast feed infants). They are also in blood, which are like “Marines” in that they are the first ones to the battlefield. Antibodies are tested for allergic reactions since all allergies and allergic reactions occur because of a weak immune system.

Ok, back to earth now! What does all of this mean and how does it affect you?

In a nutshell, depending on how healthy your immune system is, will determine how long its battle (infection or injury) or war (disease) will take. There are many factors that weaken our immune systems such as skin disorders, lack of protein and essential nutrients, poor digestion, infections and allergies, candida, poor absorption, antibiotic use, drug use, chemicals and pollutants in food and environment, and stress, stress, stress. All of these things wear out the body leaving it confused and stressed out, unable to fight in battle.

So how do you strengthen your immune system and win the war? To support, feed and strengthen your immune response, essential nutrients would include vitamins C, E, B-complex, A, Zinc, Omega 3 fatty acids, but also Alfalfa, Echinacea, Goldenseal, and Garlic. Salt baths are great for drawing toxins out of the body and exercise and massage are important for clearing out the lymphatic system.

    Hi Emily

    Really nice article here!

Yes, we need to take care and nourish our immune system.

There is some new evidence approaching that a substance called Ormes sea minerals can rebuild our DNA back to a perfect state, therefor helping our immune system run at peak levels.

Everyone can replace this in their diet, either in the food they grow or soaking their sprouts (seeds) in it.

    Happy Gardening
